Going into a surgery this common you start to hear a lot of stories. Anywhere from people who have had the worst experience of their life to people who thought it was a breeze. While listening to these stories can be panicking, they can also prove to be helpful. For me, an anxiety sufferer, it is helpful to know exactly what I am getting into. This meant asking everyone I know who got their wisdom teeth out how it was for them as well as the occasional search on youtube for funny post surgery behaviour.
I had all four of my teeth out, in hospital and under general aesthetic. The worst part of the hospital experience was the crying babies I could hear the whole time. If you want to know exactly how bad it sounded just search ‘exorcism’ on youtube and the screams of someone possessed by the devil comes close. The most shocking part of the hospital experience was the disgusting mouth wash they made me use before going into surgery. No one warned me about this. But to be fair, I am a baby and find even the smallest of things (like mouth wash) difficult. The worst part about recovery was the annoyance of the swelling. This is pretty hard to explain but when you feel it, you’ll know what I mean. It’s just annoying. The worst part about the weeks after recovery was the constant salt water rinsing. I didn’t have a problem with this for the first few days but doing it 3 times a day for a period of 4-6 weeks is a slight turn off.
Now lets move onto the best parts. The best part of the hospital experience was the cute nurse walking by every so often. Although this is not standard for every hospital the sheer thought of finding your nurse soulmate is enough to get you to the hospital to begin with. In saying that, no one falls in love when looking like a chubby cheeked snapchat filter in real life. The best part of the recovery was being waited on hand and food. I’m not gonna lie, I milked this for as long as I could with my family.
Overall, it was by no means the worst week of my life. It was actually quite nice to watch Gilmore Girls uninterrupted for a week straight. My biggest tip for you would just to make sure you are comfortable. For me that meant pillows, pillows and more pillows.
If you have any questions feel free to leave them in the comments! I would be more than happy to answer anything to make you feel more comfortable about the surgery.
